Beards by Tom Carnase

It's hard for me to make a claim like this, but this book cover for a pressing of Reginald Reynolds' 1949 book "Beards," might be my favorite type treatment ever. It's gorgeously drawn by Herb Lubalin's colleage Tom Carnase, it's funny, it's concise, it's perfect.

Suntory Time

Great promotional poster for Japan's Suntory brewing company from 1973. Really love the theme and variation with the rainbow circle shapes and this is making me long for sunny weather right about now.

Live from D.C.

I'm with the rest of the world in Washington D.C. right now and will have proper updates once I'm back home. In the mean time, have a look at their gorgeous subway map. I can't find any info on who designed it or when it was created, but I can't stop staring at it every time I'm on the train and there aren't 100 people standing in front of it.

Fanny Hill

Here's an illustrated version of the 18th century erotic book Fanny Hill with psychedelic illustrations by Zevi Blum and gorgeous typography by the one and only Herb Lubalin.

From the back of the book, "Fanny Hill, an orphaned, fortuneless naif, makes her way from country to city, is exposed to the wicked ways of the town, is set upon by various exploiters of both sexes, but finally triumphs due to her generous heart and unsullied innocence. Like Tom Jones, Fanny may be ravished again and again in body but the innocence of her soul is ever untarnished..."

Minnesota Love

With the weather as it's been lately, it's hard to come up with anything nice to say about my state, but then I see something like this and it all makes sense.

Leo Puzzle

Wezz from Burlesque found this crazy psychedelic puzzle in a thrift store in rural Minnesota about a year ago and gave it to me. It's from 1970 and the packaging is gorgeous. I have yet to unseal it, but if I get enough requests here, who knows... perhaps I'll crack it open and see what awaits inside.

No tricks in '09, it's time to build

The start of the new year is always the time when I get inspired to buckle down and get productive. Here are a couple of logos from the realm of creative productivity...
