Philately Fridays: Germany, 1964

Beautifully composed and stylishly illustrated stamp commemorating the Judo portion of the 1964 Summer Olympic Games held in Tokyo, Japan. This was the first year that Judo was an official Olympic event. Competing on behalf of the USA was Ben Nighthorse Campbell, who would go on to become a State Representative and then Senator for the state of Colorado. A postage stamp commemorating the centuries-old Romanian New Year dance known as Capra. In the dance, men known as Kukeri dress up wearing the skins of sacrified goats, beads, kerchiefs, tassels, ivy, and basil to scare off the evil spirits.
