Horatio's
Slick logo for a restaurant called Horatio's. I'm guessing it was a seafood restaurant and now I'm hungry. Designed in 1973 by Murray Gaby of Barrett & Gaby, Inc.

EXCLUSIVE: Herb Lubalin Archives at Cooper Union
Hopefully everyone who reads this blog saw fellow designer Justin Kay's thorough documentation of the incredible Herb Lubalin Archives at Cooper Union in NYC. If you haven't, I can't recommend it enough. Justin spent several hours sifting through posters, books, and even original sketches from the man who I consider to be the greatest contemporary graphic designer and typographer.
He was kind enough to save a few photographs for this exclusive post on So Much Pileup, so make sure to visit his site and leave a comment here thanking him!

Philately Fridays: Bulgaria, 1980
This is one of my all-time favorite stamps and I've been sittin' on it, waiting for the right time to share it.
Can you feel it?

Lawry's California Center
So let's suppose you're in Los Angeles in the late 1970s. You've had a long week and all you want to do is escape for a weekend getaway. You're in search of gardens, restaurants, and a front row seat to some Grade A spice packing. Where do you go? Lawry's California Center. Summery identity designed by the great Saul Bass.

Philately Fridays: Israel 1982
Stamp commemorating the 70th anniversary of the Jewish women's organization Hadassah. I wonder if this whole 3D construction was put together solely for the stamp. I just picked up a new-ish book from Victionary called Stereographics that shows more contemporary examples of using 3D design in 2D formats. Definitely worth checking out!

Quincy Jones logo
One of my all-time favorites. That giant Q just says it all. If you know who designed this and when, please drop some knowledge!

Schlagram
Love the combination of photo and illustration in this German print ad for whipped cream circa 1979. I can't help but wonder where that t-shirt is right now... Art direction by Bayerische Milchwirtschaft.

3 Days of Peace and Music
The weather has been really nice all over the place and everybody's in outdoor concert mode - Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Central Park Summerstage - so let's take a moment to look back at the mammoth festival that started it all...
Everyone's got the Woodstock LP set - you go to the used record store, it's sitting right there, you pay $5, done, no big deal. My man Bennie got something extra special when he bought his though - this fantastic booklet filled with photos, illustrations, art deco clip art, killer typography, and other groovy imagery all collaged together.

Colortrac ad
I usually flip through the monotonous ads in the first few pages of PRINT magazines pretty quickly to get to the articles, but occassionaly there's an ad that stands out. Here's one from Spectrum Inc, promoting their Colortrac™ color separation process. Love this whimsical cartoon interpretation of the U.S. map.
