Philately Fridays: Mongolia, 1980

Three stamps from Mongolia for the 1980 Summer Olympic Games in Moscow, Russia. I love how the ornate patterns and the flat illustration style both manage to play off of the great 1980 Olympics logo. It just... works.

Hungarian stamp commemorating their pentathlon event, which seems to consist of horseback riding, swimming, shooting, running, and some kind of dancing... or maybe that's fencing?

Philately Fridays: Germany, 1964

Beautifully composed and stylishly illustrated stamp commemorating the Judo portion of the 1964 Summer Olympic Games held in Tokyo, Japan. This was the first year that Judo was an official Olympic event. Competing on behalf of the USA was Ben Nighthorse Campbell, who would go on to become a State Representative and then Senator for the state of Colorado. See footage of Campbell taking on Thomas Chi Hong Ong from The Philippines below.

Philately Fridays: Cyprus, 1972

Two stamps from the island of Cyprus. I love the combination of the Greek lettering with Otl Aicher's timeless Olympic marks.
