Philately Fridays: Tunisia, 1982

Two stamps from Tunisia circa 1982. Great combinations of big colors, post-psychedelic illustration, and Arabic lettering.

More Vacation Fun Spots

Gorgeously-designed and exceuted illustration for a 1982 issue of Disney's Vacationland magazine. Two years ago, I posted a similar illustration, but this one has much more going on. One of my all time favorites.

Philately Fridays: Hungary, 1982

Two stamps from Hungary from a year of competitive recreational activities. 1982 didn't just see Budapest hosting a stamp-worthy Rubik's Cube world championship, but also a stamp-worthy European table tennis championship!

Here's some footage from that Rubik's Cube championship:

Philately Fridays: Djibouti, 1982

This is the first and only stamp I've ever found from the small Eastern African nation of Djibouti. Sort of a clusterfuck of graphic elements, but I really enjoy how haphazard and jerry-rigged the whole design is. Wild West lettering at the top with Arabic right underneath, the serif 150F, super angular satellite tower, and that gorgeous ultrabright cubic shape. Somehow it works!

The Sensational Houdini Water Torture Escape

Here is a poster designed by the great Seymour Chwast, he of Push Pin Studios fame, to promote magician Doug Henning's televised recreation of Harry Houdini's infamous stunt. This went down December 26, 1982.

Bill Cosby was there!

Here's a recap of Henning's performance:

Philately Fridays: New Zealand 1982

Two years ago, I posted this little set of three stamps from New Zealand with some really fresh early '80s watercolor illustrations.

I came across two more from the same series, and heeeeeere they are:

Philately Fridays: Israel 1982

Stamp commemorating the 70th anniversary of the Jewish women's organization Hadassah. I wonder if this whole 3D construction was put together solely for the stamp. I just picked up a new-ish book from Victionary called Stereographics that shows more contemporary examples of using 3D design in 2D formats. Definitely worth checking out!

Colortrac ad

I usually flip through the monotonous ads in the first few pages of PRINT magazines pretty quickly to get to the articles, but occassionaly there's an ad that stands out. Here's one from Spectrum Inc, promoting their Colortrac™ color separation process. Love this whimsical cartoon interpretation of the U.S. map.

Disney Week: EPCOT Center brochure

Disney Week continues with a brochure from EPCOT Center's opening year, 1982. I remember EPCOT Center in its heyday, and the young nerd in me liked it way better than Disney World. The vision of the future, the fascination of science and technology, the melting pot of world cultures, and this sharp and cleverly-designed map and travel guide.

The wheel on the bottom can be turned to reveal different information about the different countries represented at EPCOT's World Showcase. On the back of the brochure, the wheel serves a second purpose as part of a Kodak advertisement, listing different camera facts at the turn of the wheel.
